A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number online. Google cross-checks these to build confidence in your location data, and inconsistencies quietly suppress rankings.
This is the most common problem we find in Saudi local audits, and the most invisible. Nothing looks broken. Your rankings simply feel capped no matter how much content you publish.
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Google compares yours across directories, social profiles, aggregators and old listings. Where the data conflicts, confidence drops, and so does ranking.
The conflicts are rarely deliberate. A phone number changed three years ago and one directory never got updated. An old office address still listed somewhere. A trade name written as "Est." in one place and spelled out in another. Individually trivial; collectively a ranking cap.
Consistent means identical, not similar. Pick one canonical version of your details and use it literally everywhere.
Where a directory only accepts one language, use the version matching that directory's primary audience, but keep the underlying details identical.
Building new citations on top of a conflicting foundation makes the problem worse. Audit first.
Old listings at previous addresses are the most damaging and the most often missed. If you cannot get one corrected, having it removed is usually better than leaving it wrong.
Category-specific citations often carry more weight than general directories, because they are more relevant. A clinic listed on Saudi medical directories, a contractor on construction registries, a restaurant on delivery and reservation platforms — these are worth more than another generic listing.
Agencies selling "500 citations" are selling volume from low-quality directories that add little and sometimes cause harm through inconsistent auto-generated data.
A few dozen accurate listings on platforms real people and Google actually use will outperform hundreds of spam directory entries. Prioritise relevance and accuracy.
Directories change hands, merge and regenerate data from aggregators. Details you corrected last year can silently revert.
Re-audit quarterly. It is a short task once the initial cleanup is done, and it prevents the slow decay that puts businesses back where they started.
There is no target number. Accuracy matters far more than volume. A few dozen correct listings on platforms that matter in Saudi Arabia will outperform hundreds of low-quality directory entries.
Both where the platform allows it. Keep the underlying name, address and phone identical across languages. Where only one is possible, match the directory's primary audience.
Request removal instead. A removed listing is better than one showing a wrong address or a disconnected number, because the conflict is what damages you.
Typically 30 to 90 days, as Google recrawls the corrected sources. Cleaning up conflicts usually produces faster results than building new listings.
